This course is based on chapters 20 & 22 from Orthopaedic Physical Therapy by Robert A. Donatelli and Michael J. Wooden (4th Edition). This course is valuable for any therapist or therapy assistant who wants to review or improve knowledge of the latest surgical intervention and post-surgical rehabilitation of the hip and knee. The first of these chapters, Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation of the Hip Complex, takes a close look at total hip arthroplasty surgery and rehab, including advanced interventions for patients wishing to return to tennis or golf. The second chapter, Surgery of the Knee and Rehabilitation Principles, examines knee soft tissue injuries and repairs, rehabilitation techniques, bracing, ACL rehab protocols (including one specific to female athletes), and considerations for return to sports.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***After successfully completing this continuing education module, the learner should be able to: Chapter 20 • Understand studies related to hip biomechanics after total hip arthroplasty (THA) • Be familiar with different types of surgical approaches for THA • Understand THA prostheses components and surgical criteria • Describe the effect of THA on the musculoskeletal system • Assess post-THA muscular deficits • Be familiar with current recommendations for post-THA precautions • Understand and apply goals for three post-THA phases • Explain the rationale for when a post-THA patient may return to higher-level activities • Design and implement patient-specific post-THA rehabilitation, including return to sports Chapter 22 • Understand classifications of patellofemoral knee pain and its treatment • Describe the rationale for bracing and when to apply it • Understand causes and treatment for patellar tendinopathy and patellar tendon rupture • Be familiar with research regarding current rehab recommendation after ACL reconstruction • Assess when a post-ACL patient may be able to return to sports • Understand possible complications after ACL repair • Implement appropriate post-ACL rehab using accelerated nonaccelerated protocols • Explain the gender differences behind ACL injuries and recovery • Apply a rehab protocol specific to female athletes after ACL reconstruction • Understand rehab after bony trauma and articular cartilage repair • Assess post-injury/surgery complications • Implement a variety of techniques to help patients regain knee range of motion
