Description

Cardiac Disease & the Rehab Therapist is a course for physical and occupational therapists and assistants in acute or subacute care seeking to update their understanding of cardiac conditions. This course addresses cardiac disease and physical and occupational therapy rehab. Unit I is an overview of various cardiac conditions that PT and OT practitioners are most likely to see in their practice. Included in this course are heart failure, valve dysfunction, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome and more. Unit II looks at issues related to PT and OT assessment, treatment, precautions and discharge planning for patients with these diagnoses.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------COURSE OBJECTIVES:At the completion of this course, the therapist or assistant will be able to: 1. Identify the prevalence of common heart disease 2. List risk factors for common types of heart disease 3. Recognize the challenges in addressing hospital readmissions for cardiac disease 4. Describe the relationship between cardiomyopathy and other forms of heart disease 5. Identify current terminology associated with heart failure 6. Compare the two common classification systems for heart failure and explain the relationship between them 7. Define the types of valvular disease 8. Identify different types of arrhythmia and name which are potentially life-threatening 9. Define STEMI and NSTEMI 10. Recognize the relationship between NSTEMI and unstable angina 11. Identify common symptoms of cardiac disease/events 12. Identify laboratory findings that could affect therapy treatments 13. Identify medications that could affect therapy treatments 14. Recognize and explain common tests of cardiac function 15. Identify normal and abnormal heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation responses to activity 16. In a case study, recognize when to terminate activity for a patient with cardiac dysfunction 17. List and describe precautions related to cardiac surgeries 18. Explain the importance of discharge education and be able to apply knowledge for follow-up care for a patient with cardiac dysfunction.
