Description

This course introduces functional strength training for the pediatric client and explains the difference between typical strength training vs functional strength training. The course reviews the muscular system and discusses how abnormal tone affects strength. The course explores functional strength training through various avenues such as Body Weight Training, Transverse Training, Core Exercises, PNF, Dynamic Stretching/Dynamic Exercises, Upper Extremity Exercises, and Climbing Activities. Adaptations to decrease or increase the challenge are discussed, as well as how to “make it fun” for the pediatric client. Illustrations are provided for each. Pediatric case examples and correlating goals and assessments make the course clinically useful.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***At the completion of this course, the therapist will be able to: 1. compare and contrast typical strength training with functional strength training 2. discuss the basic anatomy of the skeletal muscle system. 3. define hypotonia and hypertonia and discuss how varied tone affects strength training 4. discuss how strength training is beneficial for clients with varied tone. 5. identify various types of functional strength training exercises for body weight strength training, transverse training, core exercises, PNF, and dynamic stretching. 6. identify ways to adapt functional exercises to make them easier, more challenging or more fun. 7. incorporate upper body exercises into a functional strength training routine. 8. discuss how climbing is a functional strengthening activity. 9. apply a basic progression of exercises for each of the major muscle groups 10. discuss several functional assessments and be able to apply in case studies presented.
