Description

The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the ethical issues that Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants may face in regards to protecting children from child abuse. Using the real and very serious issue of child abuse this course will show you how ethical principles are applied in the professional life of a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant. The therapist will learn how to recognize signs of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect, and will be better informed about our ethical and professional responsibilities when it comes to protecting a child from abuse. This course includes and applies the APTA Code of Ethics for the PT, the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant, the Guide for Professional Conduct for the PT and PTA, and discusses what your requirements are ethically and under the law in reporting child abuse. Application of a practical and useful Model for Decision Making is included as a helpful tool to use in the clinical setting.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***At the completion of this course, the physical therapy clinician will be able to: 1. define ethics and define child abuse 2. differentiate between problems, issues and dilemmas 3. identify child abuse statistics 4. discuss the theoretical basis for ethical decision-making 5. explain the difference between morals and ethics and discuss the relationship between ethics and the law 6. apply theory to reality – reporting, intervening, gathering evidence for child abuse 7. identify the signs of abuse and explain the 4 categories or types of child abuse 8. identify what the law says in your state regarding reporting child abuse, including when to report, the penalties for not reporting, immunity from liability, and confidentiality 9. apply a practical and useful Model for Decision Making in the therapy practice setting and be able to recognize red flags of possible child abuse in real case scenarios 10. apply the APTA’s Code of Ethics for the PT and Standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA in a case study on child abuse 11. discuss how the APTA Guide for Professional Conduct and Guide for Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant further interprets the principles and standards in the APTA Code of Ethics for the PT and PTA
