Description

Have you considered changing your treatment focus to pediatrics or geriatrics? Are you looking for new treatment ideas in your current treatment setting? This course is a comprehensive guide to the treatment of both adults and children affected with neurological disorders. The course reviews neuroanatomy, motor control and motor development, and then addresses specific disorders seen in both children and adults. The pediatric section contains treatment approaches for Cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, Down Syndrome, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Cystic Fribrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Rett Syndrome, and more. The adult section addresses treatment approaches for CVA, TBI, spinal cord injury, Parkinsons, MS, Post polio syndrome, ALS, & Guillain-Barre. PNF technique is addressed, as well as the importance of positioning and handling to foster motor function. This course emphasis is on providing the therapist with etiology, clinical manifestations, and then treatment strategy for each of the neuro diagnoses found in children and adults in all stages of recovery. Case studies and clear illustrations are included in this updated (2015) comprehensive neuro treatment guide for both physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. Includes the updated text Neurologic Interventions for Physical Therapy (3rd ed, 2016) by Suzanne Martin, PT, MACT and Mary Kessler, PT, MHS.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES*** 1. Explain the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation patterns, and rationale for using PNF in neurorehab. 15. Identify common complications seen in patients S/P CVA. 16. Apply appropriate physical therapy treatment interventions for patients who have experienced a stroke in specific case studies. 17. Identify causes of traumatic brain injury and determine physical therapy treatment intervention to improve functional and cognitive deficits. 18. Recall causes and complications of spinal cord injury. 19. Identify segmental level of muscle innervation and be able to relate it to level of function in the patient with spinal cord injury. 20. Develop an appropriate treatment program for the patient with spinal cord injury. 21. Recall the incidence, etiology and clinical manifestations of Parkinsons, MS, ALS, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and postpolio syndrome. 22.
