Pharmacology by definition is the study of how chemical substances affect living tissue and how these substances bind to receptors to affect normal function. This pharmacology course is written specifically for rehab professionals. It includes valuable detailed information on various disease processes, and then introduces the reader to how these chemical agents affect the body either beneficially or adversely at the cellular and organ level. Added bonus in this course is the special application section for therapists, how specific drugs affect exercise, and specific precautions for the rehab professional. This is an updated version of a popular course which now contains sections on vitamins and minerals, drugs used in wound care, and alternative medicine. The author is both a PT and an OTR with a PhD in pharmacology.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***1. understand the differences between pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. 2. recognize the difference between Schedule I to V controlled substances. 3. know the targets of drug action. 4. know the classifications of adverse drug reactions. 5. recognize the drugs that act on the autonomic nervous system and know the therapeutic concerns that affect patients receiving therapy who are on these agents. 6. recognize the drugs that are antihypertensive agents, know the pathophysiology of blood pressure, and be able to recognize therapeutic concerns of patients on diuretics, beta blockers, vasodilators, and calcium channel blockers. 7. understand the pathophysiology and treatment of ischemic heart disease, the clinical presentation of angina, drug regimens used to treat and therapeutic concerns for patients receiving therapy. 8. know the classifications of congestive heart failure, and drug therapy used to treat CHF and cardiac arrhythmias. 9. know the drugs used to control bronchial asthma, the clinical signs of exercise induced asthma, the clinical signs of COPD, and the therapeutic concerns for patients on drugs for respiratory disorders. 10. understand the physiological control of digestion, recognize the drugs used to treat acid-related disease, and be familiar with the therapeutic concerns for patients on gastrointestinal agents. 11. recognize the three basic types of anesthetics, and understand the way each may be administered, their physiological effects, and therapeutic concerns following general anesthesia. 12. understand the physiology of pain, recognize the typical pain control drugs and know their adverse effects. 13. understand the mechanism of anti-inflammatory agents, and their beneficial and adverse effects, and therapeutic concerns regarding these agents. 14. recognize and understand the mechanism of drug treatment for arthritis related conditions. 15. understand the basic physiology of the endocrine system, recognize typical drugs used to treat endocrine disorders, and know the therapeutic concerns for patients who are taking agents for these disorders. 16. understand the pathophysiology behind osteoporosis and diabetes, recognize the agents used to treat both, know the adverse effects of insulin, recognize the symptoms of hypoglycemia, and how to respond. 17. recognize drug treatment for depression and anxiety, and know the adverse reactions associated with antidepressants. 18. know the typical drug treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, recognize adverse drug reactions to these drugs, and know the therapeutic concerns for those patients taking antipsychotics or drugs for bipolar disorder. 19. know the signs and symptoms of seizure activity, and the major side effects of patients taking anti-seizure meds. 20. understand the drug treatment used for ADHD, and the therapeutic concerns for those who are on stimulant therapy. 21. know the physiology of spasticity and muscle spasms, recognize the centrally acting agents for spasticity, and the typical agents used as muscle relaxants. 22. know the pathophysiology for degenerative neurological disorders of Parkinson's, MS and Alzheimer's, the typical agents to treat, and the clinical practice considerations needed with these disorders. 23. recognize how to classify bacteria, know the consequences of overuse or inappropriate use of antibiotics, know precautions for C-diff and MRSA and typical drugs used to treat, know the correlation between HIV and TB, and the adverse effects of antibiotics. 24. understand how viruses replicate and invade their hosts, understand the mechanism of antiviral agents, know drug treatment for HIV and hepatitis B, and understand therapeutic concerns with antiviral agents. 25. understand pathophysiology of cancer, the major chemotherapy drug classes, and generally how chemotherapy agents work to destroy cancer cells. Know chemotherapy side effects and therapy implications. 26. understand the interaction between cardiac meds and exercise, know normal aerobic responses to exercise, and be able to compare with patient on beta blockers and calcium channel blockers. 27. know how drug therapy for diabetes affects exercise, and know precautions and exercise guidelines for the patient with diabetes. 28. know biochemical functions of vitamins and minerals, the risks and consequences of inadequate intake, and food-nutrient drug interactions. 29. understand considerations regarding enzymatic debridement agents and cleansing agents to promote wound healing. 30. learn the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy for selected complementary and alternative agents.

Very clear and concise. Pertinent information without extra fluff to fill pages. Good diagnosis vs. PT treatment information. Common knowledge presented along with scientific information, brings it to a realistic level with some of the information. Worth the money and 30 hours.
