Description

Falls and safety issues comprise a growing portion of the home health physical therapists’ caseload. This course is designed to broaden your knowledge base regarding the assessment and treatment options available for improving balance and safety. Separate chapters are devoted to the vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems as they relate to sensory awareness and balance response. In the therapeutic interventions chapter we explore the possibilities available for functional rehab activities in the home setting. This course will shed light on ways to obtain faster, better functional outcomes for your patients in an easy-to-understand format with photographs to provide visual aids. Increasing balance responses and maximizing the neuromuscular control systems is the focus throughout this course. We utilize sports-medicine, occupational therapy, neuroanatomy, ophthalmic, and neurological rehab principles and research to justify these treatment techniques.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***At the completion of this course, the therapy clinician will be able to: • List rationale for using functional activities as the most appropriate way to implement changes in functional mobility. • Examine the complexity of the systems which drive and affect balance and the effects of pathology on those systems. • Utilize available items in the home to set up an effective environment for implementing functional activities in a safe manner. • Make clinical decisions related to differential diagnosis of vestibular pathology with particular attention to BPPV and treatment techniques. • List visual deficits which impact functional balance and safety. • Compare the positive and negative aspects of assistive devices uses for stability during ambulation. • Identify manual skills necessary to provide neuromuscular facilitation for improved control of posture and balance. • Improve clinical decision-making skills regarding implementation and progression of therapeutic activities and home program instruction. • Evaluate environmental factors in the home and their influence on safety and functional mobility. • Document functional progress consistent with the guidelines for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid • Improve financial reimbursement through better utilization of therapy services to limit penalties for unnecessary treatments.

By the way, the course material itself was phenomenal – much more comprehensive than any other balance or fall prevention course I’ve taken. I’ll look for this author again!

It was a very informative , interesting and complete course. It is very practical and immediately applicable to the home care setting.
Joan C., Apr. 27, 2017

This is an excellent course for any therapist but especially ones who work with the geriatric population in a home health setting. I would not classify this as an advanced course since a significant portion of the material hearkens back to my coursework which provides a smooth transition into newer and more practical content.
Thuan N., Feb. 12, 2017
