Description

Sensory processing influences an individual's overall perception of the world. Sensation provides reality and meaning to our lives, connecting us to other human beings and to life itself. The way in which we interpret and integrate sensory experiences influences our interactions with the world around us and the ability to adapt to environmental demands. In the pediatric setting, the therapist will often see children diagnosed with one of 3 Autism Spectrum Disorders: Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Sensory integration disorders have been identified as prevalent in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In this course, the therapist will learn: diagnostic criteria for Autistic Spectrum Disorders, the relationship between ASD and sensory processing, sensory integration theory, evaluation of sensory processing in children with ASD, treatment strategies for children with sensory processing disorders and ASD, sensory integration evidence-based practice and research.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------***COURSE OBJECTIVES***1. Identify the basic theoretical premises and assumptions underlying sensory integration theory and apply these to clinical practice with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). 2. Explain sensory integration terminology and the relevance to clinical communication. 3. Identify the types of sensory processing disorders and their characteristics. 4. Compare and contrast two models of sensory processing and their application to evaluation and treatment in individuals with ASD. 5. List the primary diagnostic characteristics of ASD. 6. Fantastic course. Well written, easy to follow and immediately applicable to daily practice. Thank you for providing practical treatment ideas! Very helpful.
Ashley C., MA OT, Jul. 1, 2016

Clear articulation of sensory processing disorders and how the sensory systems inter-relate.

Jennifer O. OR OT, Feb. 8, 2016

My field as a PT is adult orthopedics, but I chose this study because I have a child with sensory issues who has been through years of therapy. The scope of this study was a little beyond my range, but I'm sure a pedi PT would be able to understand more. I liked the pt. cases that were discussed. I would like more ideas of treatment options.
